6th International Conference on Urban Air Quality Cyprus, 27-29 March 2007

A Welcome Statement by the Chair, Professor Ranjeet S Sokhi

On behalf of the Organising Committee you are invited to participate in the next International Conference on Urban Air Quality. The conference will be held in Cyprus and is being organised by University of Hertfordshire and University of Cyprus jointly with ACCENT, COST 728, Cyprus International Institute for the Environment and Public Health in Association with Harvard School of Public Health.

Air pollution remains a key issue for achieving sustainable development of cities. Our urban areas are continuing to grow in terms of population, transport, energy consumption and utilities.  This growth is having local impacts in terms of exposure to high concentrations near streets as well as impacts on regional and global scales including climate change.  Consequently, the need for improved understanding of the science of urban air pollution remains a priority for the wider scientific community. Despite improvements in technology, users still require new, robust management and assessment tools to formulate effective control policies and strategies.

UAQ2007 brings together scientists and other stakeholders from the across the globe to discuss the latest advances in our understanding of air pollution and its impacts on urban areas.  The conference will also seek to highlight developments in management strategies and assessment tools for policy and decision makers.

We are pleased to acknowledge our local hosts, the University of Cyprus, as well as the support of Cyprus International Institute for the Environment and Public Health, Harvard School of Public Health, the World Meteorological Organisation, ACCENT (FP6 Network on Atmospheric Composition), Cluster of European Air Quality Research (CLEAR), COST 728 Action (Enhancing Mesoscale Meteorological Modelling Capabilities for Air Pollution and Dispersion Applications), AIR4EU (FP6 Project), European Meteorological Society (EMS), American Meteorological Society (AMS), Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) and EURASAP.

We look forward to your participation in Cyprus.

Ranjeet S Sokhi
